Settled in 1834, Crown Point has preserved many of its historic buildings on the town square. The 1878 Lake County Courthouse is a grand combination of Romanesque and Georgian architectural styles. Because local law allowed couples to marry without a waiting period, thousands came here to be wed between 1915 and 1940, including such celebrities as Ronald Reagan and Rudolph Valentino. John Dillinger made his famous escape from the county jail in 1934 while awaiting murder charges; tours of the “escape-proof” Sheriff's House are available Thursdays and Saturdays, late April through September.
